My idea short short version:
1.Joan is able to sense children in peril; not dead children but those in life threatening situations.
2.Her mom is a police officer, so Joan gives her mom details about what happened.Her mom then finds enough evidence to lead the police to the child without involving her daughter's "gift".
3.Story is about the worst case she's "seen" yet; horrific imprisonment of young girls who are being abused.Her mom can't find the evidence to point them to their specific location, so they are desperately working to solve the mystery before they all die.

perhaps this is the case that will force them to go rouge and end the danger by operating outside the law
or the only other way, risk using Joan as the evidence they need, set her up to get kidnapped and leave a trail for the police to follow to the other girls. but with Joan captured no more psychic help.
